Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Officer to join our dynamic team in Rumuokoro, Port Harcourt. This crucial role is integral to upholding Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Plc’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and sustainable operational practices across our oil and gas assets. The Environmental Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive environmental management systems, ensuring strict adherence to all national and international environmental laws, regulations, and company policies. You will play a pivotal role in minimizing the environmental footprint of our operations, conducting thorough environmental impact assessments, facilitating internal and external audits, and promoting a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility among our staff and contractors. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001 standards and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local, national (e.g., DPR, NESREA), and international environmental regulations pertinent to oil and gas operations.
- Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Audits (EAs) for new projects and existing operations, preparing detailed reports and recommendations.
- Monitor environmental performance indicators, including emissions, effluents, waste generation, and resource consumption, tracking trends and identifying areas for improvement.
- Oversee waste management programs, including hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal, ensuring compliance with best practices and regulatory guidelines.
- Investigate environmental incidents, near misses, and non-conformances, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and deliver environmental training programs for employees and contractors to foster a strong environmental culture and ensure awareness of policies and procedures.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, and industry partners on environmental matters, representing the company professionally.
- Prepare and submit regular environmental performance reports to management and regulatory agencies.
- Support the development and implementation of environmental risk assessments and emergency response plans.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in environmental management within the oil and gas sector.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian environmental laws and regulations (e.g., DPR, NESREA).
- Familiarity with international environmental standards (e.g., ISO 14001, IFC Performance Standards).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in conducting EIAs, EAs, and environmental monitoring.
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certifications such as NEBOSH Environmental Management, IEMA, or similar.
- Experience with environmental management software and data analysis tools.
- Knowledge of climate change mitigation strategies and carbon management in the energy sector.
