This role is more than just teaching; it’s about being a kumu (teacher) in the broadest sense – a mentor, a guide, and a cultural practitioner within the Hawaiian context. You will be instrumental in weaving Hawaiian language, history, and traditions into daily instruction, helping our students connect with their identity and ancestral knowledge. We are looking for an educator who embodies our values of aloha, mālama, ʻimi Naʻauao, lokomaikaʻi, and haʻahaʻa, and who is committed to contributing positively to our vibrant school community and the Lāhui.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and assess engaging, standards-aligned curriculum infused with Hawaiian cultural perspectives.
  • Create and maintain a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom learning environment.
  • Employ diverse instructional strategies to accommodate varying learning styles and abilities.
  • Monitor student progress rigorously, provide timely and constructive feedback, and adapt instruction as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, support staff, and school leadership to enhance the educational experience.
  • Communicate regularly and transparently with parents/guardians regarding student performance and development.
  • Participate actively in professional development opportunities and school-wide initiatives.
  • Integrate Hawaiian language, history, and values into daily lessons and classroom activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and behavioral observations.
  • Adhere strictly to all school policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a relevant subject area from an accredited institution.
  • Valid state teaching license/certification (or eligibility for certification) appropriate for the teaching level/subject.
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time classroom teaching experience in a K-12 setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in modern educational technology and learning management systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Deep commitment to and understanding of Hawaiian culture, values, and educational philosophy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic educational community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education or a specialized subject area.
  • Experience teaching in a multicultural or indigenous educational setting.
  • Familiarity with project-based learning, inquiry-based instruction, and restorative practices.
  • Experience living or working in Hawaii.
  • Fluency in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language).
