Key Responsibilities
- Receive, log, and prepare patient specimens (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) for analysis with meticulous attention to detail.
- Perform a variety of laboratory tests and analyses using automated and manual techniques, following established protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and identifying any malfunctions for repair.
- Accurately record and document test results, maintaining comprehensive records in compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies.
- Conduct quality control checks and participate in quality assurance programs to ensure the reliability and accuracy of all laboratory data.
- Prepare reagents, media, and other solutions necessary for laboratory procedures, strictly adhering to safety guidelines.
- Assist senior scientific staff with complex analyses, research projects, and the development of new testing methods.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, adhering to all health and safety regulations and infection control policies.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, medical staff, and other departments regarding sample status, test results, and any technical issues.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a diagnostic or scientific laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques, including pipetting, microscopy, and sample preparation.
- Strong understanding of laboratory health and safety regulations, including COSHH.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and recording data.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- A foundational understanding of relevant scientific principles (e.g., biology, chemistry, microbiology).
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience with specific analytical instrumentation relevant to clinical diagnostics.
- HCPC registration or working towards it.
