Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Compliance Officer to join our dynamic team in Chinatown, Chicago. This immediate-start role is pivotal in ensuring Hydro One’s adherence to all relevant local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, with a particular focus on the energy and utility sector’s complex legal landscape within the United States. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring compliance programs, conducting thorough risk assessments, and providing expert guidance to internal stakeholders. You will be responsible for interpreting intricate regulations, translating them into actionable policies, and ensuring that our operational procedures align with legal mandates. This position requires a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, exceptional analytical capabilities, and the ability to foster a culture of compliance across the organization. The role involves staying abreast of evolving legislative changes, conducting internal audits, and preparing detailed reports for senior management, contributing directly to Hydro One’s reputation for ethical leadership and regulatory excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance policies and procedures in alignment with federal, state, and local regulations relevant to the energy and utility sector.
- Conduct regular compliance risk assessments, identifying potential areas of non-compliance and developing strategies for mitigation.
- Monitor changes in regulatory requirements and communicate their impact to relevant departments, ensuring timely updates to internal policies and training materials.
- Perform internal audits and investigations to assess compliance effectiveness and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide expert compliance advice and training to employees and management on a wide range of regulatory matters.
- Prepare and submit accurate compliance reports to senior management and regulatory bodies as required.
- Liaise with external auditors, legal counsel, and regulatory authorities on compliance-related issues.
- Manage and resolve compliance-related inquiries and complaints efficiently and effectively.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's compliance framework and ethical standards.
- Participate in the review of new business initiatives and projects to ensure compliance from the outset.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in a compliance-focused role, preferably within a regulated industry.
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local regulatory frameworks and compliance best practices.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- High level of integrity, ethics, and professional conduct.
- Proficiency in compliance software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or a Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Professional certification such as CCEP (Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional) or CRCM (Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager).
- Experience in the energy, utility, or infrastructure sectors.
- Familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., CCPA, GDPR) and cybersecurity compliance.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering compliance training programs.
