Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Project Engineer to join our team, based in Valdosta, Georgia. While Rio Tinto’s primary operations are globally distributed in resource-rich regions, this pivotal role supports our broader corporate infrastructure, supply chain optimization, and regional strategic initiatives from a key logistical and administrative hub. As a Project Engineer, you will be instrumental in the planning, execution, and successful completion of various engineering projects. This could encompass anything from optimizing logistical pathways for materials, implementing new technologies in regional facilities, or managing infrastructure upgrades that support our wider network of global operations. You will be responsible for defining project scope, developing detailed project plans, managing budgets, and ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage comprehensive project plans, including scope, objectives, schedules, resource allocation, and detailed budgets.
  • Lead and coordinate project teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among internal Rio Tinto stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks, and proactively implement mitigation strategies to ensure timely and on-budget delivery without compromising quality.
  • Prepare and present regular, insightful project status reports to senior management and key stakeholders, highlighting achievements and challenges.
  • Ensure all project activities strictly comply with relevant engineering standards, company policies, industry best practices, and stringent safety regulations.
  • Manage vendor relationships, procurement processes, and contract negotiations for project-related services, equipment, and materials.
  • Conduct thorough site visits and inspections (as applicable to project type) to assess progress, ensure quality control, and address any on-site challenges.
  • Facilitate constructive problem-solving and critical decision-making throughout the entire project lifecycle to overcome obstacles efficiently.
  • Contribute actively to continuous improvement initiatives, knowledge sharing, and the development of best practices within the engineering department and broader organization.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical) or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in project engineering or project management roles within a corporate or industrial setting.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6, JIRA).
  • Strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles, project lifecycle management, and capital project delivery methodologies.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to influence and motivate teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple complex projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical capabilities, with a keen eye for detail and data-driven decision making.
  • Thorough familiarity with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations and best practices in industrial operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or an equivalent project management credential.
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related management field.
  • Experience in heavy industry, logistics, supply chain management, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit) for design review and collaboration.
  • Experience working in a multinational corporate environment, demonstrating cultural awareness and adaptability.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification or experience with continuous improvement methodologies.
