Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Workshop Manager to lead our dynamic team in Christchurch. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned professional to step into a critical leadership role with immediate impact. As Workshop Manager, you will be instrumental in overseeing all aspects of our busy workshop operations, ensuring the efficient and high-quality maintenance and repair of a diverse fleet of heavy machinery and commercial vehicles. You will be responsible for optimising workflow, managing resources, upholding stringent safety standards, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This role requires a hands-on leader who can inspire and develop a team of skilled technicians, while also maintaining excellent customer relationships and contributing to the overall success of the branch. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of workshop technicians, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Manage daily workshop operations, including job scheduling, resource allocation, and workflow optimization to meet deadlines and service level agreements.
  • Ensure all work is completed to the highest quality standards, adhering to manufacturer specifications and company procedures.
  • Implement and enforce robust Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all staff.
  • Monitor and manage workshop performance metrics, including productivity, efficiency, and quality, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Maintain strong customer relationships, addressing enquiries, providing technical advice, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee inventory management of parts and consumables, ensuring optimal stock levels and minimising wastage.
  • Collaborate with sales, parts, and administration teams to ensure seamless service delivery and cross-departmental efficiency.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing training and development opportunities for workshop staff.
  • Manage workshop budgets, control costs, and contribute to the financial objectives of the branch.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a heavy machinery or automotive workshop environment, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Proven technical expertise in heavy diesel mechanics, automotive engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop a skilled workforce.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with staff, customers, and management effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex operational challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Thorough understanding of Health & Safety regulations and best practices within a workshop setting.
  • Proficiency in using workshop management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid New Zealand full driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant trade qualification (e.g., Heavy Automotive Engineering, Diesel Mechanic).
  • Formal qualification in management or leadership.
  • Experience with Hitachi, Scania, John Deere, or similar heavy equipment brands.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems in heavy machinery.
