This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Data Engineer looking for flexible hours and the chance to contribute significantly to critical data projects that underpin our innovative software solutions. While this role is primarily remote, occasional travel to our Huddersfield office for team meetings or workshops may be beneficial for collaboration and team building, but it is not a mandatory requirement. Your expertise will help shape our data strategy and ensure we leverage data effectively to drive informed decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable and efficient data pipelines using various ETL/ELT tools and techniques.
  • Build and optimise data warehousing solutions (e.g., data lakes, data marts) to support reporting, analytics, and machine learning initiatives.
  • Ensure data quality, reliability, and accuracy across all data platforms through robust testing and validation.
  • Collaborate effectively with data scientists, business analysts, and software engineers to understand data requirements and deliver appropriate, high-performing solutions.
  • Implement and manage data security, privacy protocols, and compliance measures (e.g., GDPR) within our data infrastructure.
  • Monitor data systems performance, troubleshoot issues promptly, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Automate data-related processes and workflows to improve efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices, emerging data technologies, and tools, recommending their adoption where appropriate.
  • Document data models, data flows, ETL/ELT processes, and system configurations thoroughly for maintainability and knowledge sharing.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in SQL and extensive experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server).
  • Strong programming skills in Python for data manipulation, scripting, and API integration.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and services (e.g., AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery, Azure Data Factory, Snowflake).
  • Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and data lake architectures.
  • Demonstrable experience designing, building, and optimising ETL/ELT processes.
  • Understanding of data governance, data security principles, and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a remote, distributed team.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or similar distributed processing frameworks.
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools like Apache Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect.
  • Proficiency with version control systems, particularly Git.
  • Experience with real-time data streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis).
  • Previous experience working effectively in a remote capacity for an extended period.
  • Certifications in cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics, Azure Data Engineer Associate).

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive part-time salary commensurate with experience.
  • Flexible working hours to support work-life balance.
  • Fully remote work setup, providing location independence.
  • Opportunity to work on challenging, high-impact data projects.
